📋 Oʻahu Reminders

Important things to know before and during your visit

✈️ Before You Arrive
  • Hawaiʻi is the 50th state of the USA. US citizens need a Real-ID compliant ID to board. Non-US citizens need a valid US visa.
  • Your point of entry is Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).
  • If coming from outside the US, you must undergo customs and immigration and present your passport.
  • Your luggage will undergo agricultural inspection. Certain fruits, plants, and animals are prohibited.
  • Rideshare pickup is at the ground level of the arrivals area. Taxis and TheBus are also available.
  • The most common way to get around Oʻahu is by rental car. Book in advance, especially in summer.
🌺 While You're Staying
  • Hawaiʻi has a 4% General Excise Tax (GET) on most goods and services, plus a ~10.25% hotel room tax.
  • Tipping is customary — 15–20% at restaurants, $1–2 per drink at bars, $2–5/day for housekeeping.
  • The sun is very strong year-round. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect coral reefs.
  • Ocean safety: always check surf conditions before entering the water. Obey posted warning signs.
  • Respect the land (ʻāina) and sea. Do not touch or disturb sea turtles, monk seals, or coral.
  • Many popular sites (Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay) require advance reservations. Book early.
  • Aloha spirit is real — be respectful, patient, and kind. It goes a long way on the island.
  • Parking in Waikiki and popular spots can be expensive. Consider TheBus or rideshare for short trips.
